CROCHET STITCHES
Ch.--Chain. Make a loop , insert hook, threow thread over hook, and draw a loop through first one made. Each loop is a chain stitch.
Sl.st.--Slip Stitch. Insert hook in foundation chain, draw a loop through it and the loop on hook.
Sc.--Single Crochet.
Make chain, insert hook through second last chain, throw thread over hook, draw through, throw thread over hook, draw through both loops at once.
Dc.--Double Crochet. Throw thread over hook and draw a loop through foundation chain: throw thread over hook and draw through two loops, thread over hook and draw through last two loops.
Tc.--Treble Crochet. throw thread over hook twice, draw a loop through foundation chain, throw thread over again, draw through the two loops, throw thread over and draw through two, thread over and draw through last two.
P.--Picot. Chain 4 and make a single crochet in fourth chain from hook.
Sp.--Space. This is for Filet Crochet Work. Chain two stitches, skip two stitches, one double crochet into next stitch.
Knot st. Knot Stitch. Having a st on the needle, drawing the loop out to the length of 3 ch, draw the thread through for a ch st. Take up the single thread of this loop and work ond sc st on it. Repeat once. Skip 5 sts of the previous row, if not knot st. and work 1 sc. if the previous row be knot st, make 1 sc each side of the sc between the loops of the last row.
Blk.--Block. Also for Filet Crochet. Four dc in adjoining sts. the number of dc in adjoining blocks is found by multiplying the number of blocks by 3 and adding one. this sample would read 1sp, 1blk, 1sp, 2blks, 1sp, 1blk.
H dc.--Half Double Crochet. Worked in groups of 3, 4 or more dc, by making 1st half of each st of each till you have all of the stitches half made and working all off at once.
Ht.--Half Treble Crochet. this is worked like the half dc except you throw thread over twice, two off, two off, holding the last stitch of each tr until you have all 3 or 4 as the case may be, when all are worked off together as one st.
Triple Treble. Worked like treble, but thread over 3 times.
Fm.--Fancy Mesh. Also called Lacet. this consists of two rows. the first a row of long meshes, 1 dc, 5 ch, skip 5 st, 1 dc, repeat. For the second row, 1 dc in dc of long mesh, ch 3, catch in center of 5 ch of 1 m, ch 3, dc over dc.
Sh.--Shell In one stitch of previous row make 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the same st.
Lat.--Lattice Stitch. For the Lattice St, make the first loop, like the first loop of knot st, make a tight sc to hold the loop firm, then a dc, repeat as many times as desired.FILET CROCHET
To copy a filet patter perfectly, the worker must make the meshes absolutely square, and experience alone will do this. When throwing the thread over to make the mesh, if held tooloosely, or if not drawn down perfectly. It will make the mesh longer, and if the thread is drawn too tightly, it will make the mesh wider, but practice will soon perfect the square. the thread should be drawn up exactly the length of the chain of 2, and they will make a perfect square of the mesh.
There is one rule for starting filet. One need not be at a loss how many chs are needed. Count the number of meshes, multiply by 3, and add 3 for the first side if the last mesh is a block, or 5 if the first mesh is a space. A mesh is one square. If it is a space, it is an open mesh. If it is a closed mesh, that is, 4 dcs, it is a block. If this is once understood it is not necessary to say ch 5, turn, or ch 3, 2 or more dcs. every time you turn you chain either 3 or 5, when you are making filet.
